Four Israeli settlers were killed when members of the Izz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of Hamas, opened fire on their vehicle in the Qiryat Arba area near the city of Hebron in the West Bank late on 31 August. In a statement a Hamas spokesman praised the attack, stating that it was a “natural response to the crimes of the occupation”.
