The Pakistani-born US citizen suspected of trying to detonate a vehicleborne improvised explosive device (VBIED) in New Yorks Times Square on 1 May was formally charged during a court hearing in the city on 17 June. Faisal Shahzad, 30, faces 10 counts, including charges of terrorism and attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction. He faces life in prison if convicted.
