At least 37 people – including at least seven security force personnel, a priest, five militants and 24 civilians – were killed and 56 others were wounded when five suspected Al-Qaeda in Iraq (AQI) militants, wearing suicide vests, attacked the Iraqi stock exchange and a nearby Assyrian Catholic church in the Karadah district of the capital Baghdad on 31 October. After killing two security guards during a clash outside the Iraqi stock exchange, the militants retreated inside the church, holding around 100 worshipers hostage. Security forces subsequently stormed the church, rescuing the majority of the hostages, and killing the five militants.
