A Pakistani-born US citizen, convicted of attempting to detonate a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (VBIED) in Times Square in New York on 1 May, was sentenced to life in prison at a court hearing in Manhattan on 5 October. Faisal Shahzad, 30, had pleaded guilty to all 10 charges related to the failed attack.
