Three police officers were shot dead when suspected Islamist militants attacked a police station in the Hamparan Perak area of North Sumatra province early on 22 September. The attack took place less than two kilometres away from the site of a recent counter-terrorism operation in which three suspected militants, alleged to be linked to Jemaah Islamiyah (JI), were killed.
