Twelve suspected Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) militants and six Mauritanian soldiers were killed in an armed clash during a counter-terrorism operation which began on 17 September, and lasted until 18 September, in unspecified areas on both sides of the border between Mauritania and Mali. The operation began in Mauritania before soldiers pursued the militants across the border with Mali.
